Being a police officer is also very gratifying since they help people all day long in their most difficult moments.

The main things that police officers do while working can be summarized in tree things. They patrol their assigned territory in their patrol car, they investigate, and they do paperwork.

On a typical day, police officers start their shift by a small reunion where their boss talks to them about the bigger events that happened during the previous shifts, they get special assignations if there are any, and they discuss what things they need to watch during their shifts. For example, there could be a person missing and they all talk about where they need to look for this person, who to contact, who that person is, etc. Then, they go outside and prepare their material and inspect their patrol car to make sure that everything is in order. After that, they indicate to their colleges that they are available to receive calls. Police officers then patrol their territory, give traffic tickets to the people who didn’t respect the Road Safety Code, respond to calls and do paperwork about their interventions. These are very diverse. They can be for domestic violence, mischief, a conflict between neighbors, a medical emergency, etc.

Police officers work in the territory that is assigned to their police organization. For example, police officers for the SPVM (the police organization of Montreal) can patrol all over the city of Montreal. They usually never do such a thing, tho because they have more specific territories assigned to them based in what PDQ (the police station of the neighborhood) they work for. Police officers primarily work inside their patrol vehicle. There are police officers for every part of Canada.

In the province of Quebec, people who want to become a police officer need to complete a formation of three years in Police Technology in a Cegep. After that, they need to study at the National Police School of Quebec for fifteen weeks. Aspiring officers also need to pass some physical tests in order to be accepted in the Cegep program than at the National Police School of Quebec which mean that they need to be in excellent physical shape.

According to the Sûreté du Québec, police officers make, at the beginning of their career, 48 386 $ and 84 366 $ after sixty months.

Police officers receive additional training and formations during all their career depending on the new practices. If they use drugs, there is a risk of getting pricked by one of their syringes or simply coming into contact with their blood in a medical emergency or during an arrest.

Robots and other technologies could become tools for police officers in their day to day life, but they will not completely replace police officers. Indeed, the job of a police officers isn’t just giving traffic tickets. Police officers need to be versatile in order to help the people in need in various situations. They need to be empathetic, make decision based on the context, for example, deciding between giving a chance to a teen who just committed a small offense or arresting him and understanding the complex situations of people in need in order to help them and address their difficulties. Robots can’t do any of those things at the moment.

In conclusion, I am currently a second year student in Police Technology at Ahuntsic College. I would like to go to the École Nationale de Police du Québec when in a year and a half, just after I finish my program. After that, I would like to study either Psychology or Law at University. If I study in Psychology, I will study for eight years and if I study in Law, I will study for five years. After that, I would like to become a police officer for the Sûreté du Québec. Five years after my beginnings in the organization, I would like to become a Detective Sergeant and investigate murder cases. This is my final goal.
